Cruzcampo brewery was founded in 1904, the first
in Andalucia, by the Osborne brothers, Tomas and
Roberto. Seville was chosen because its size of population,
favourable climate and high quality of water.
It took its original name 'La Cruz del Campo' directly
from that of a small temple, symbolic to the city, only
200m from the brewery.
The Osbornes had a long family history in the wine
trade, but beer was a new venture and expert advice
was sought, especially from German brewers. The
company logo which dates from 1926 is of Germanic
design: 'Gambrinus' in his Tyrolean hat holds a foaming
stein. Gambrinus, the patron saint of brewing,
has become the symbol of the brand Cruzcampo, and
his message 'Beer brings enjoyment to the world' is
spread globally. Vive la vida - Enjoy life.

In 1999 Grupo Cruzcampo SA was acquired by Heineken and merged with their other Spanish
brewery El Aguila SA. With 37% group share in
the third biggest European home market, Cruzcampo
produces over 5.2 million hectolitres per
year and is distributed worldwide, yet still retains
its regional identity and commitment to quality.

- In The UK |
|
|
Cruzcampo was first imported into the UK in the
summer of 1994 on the crest of the wave of other
niche lagers. It was easily identifiable to Spanish
holiday makers but progressed into the mainstream
market on account of its quality. In 2000 it won the
Gold Medal for Premium Lagers in the International
Beer and Cider Competition. It is now established as a
firm favourite and sales in the UK continue to develop
through a network of independent suppliers.
|
|
Draught sales are currently increasing at over 30%
and with strong growth in the bottled sector
Cruzcampo is being appreciated by more discerning
drinkers in an increasing number of environments:
style-bars, restaurants, tapas bars and pubs.
It retains its status as a 'premium lager' through
prestigious and culturally identifiable outlets, and
a strategy of not being discounted in supermarkets
and multiples.
