PORTS

Producer: HUTCHESON - Oporto

Hutcheson & Co was founded in 1881 by two Englishmen, Thomas Page Hutcheson and Alexander Davidson Taylor (a scion of the Taylor's Port family) for the commercialisation and export of Port Wines. Although a small company, since its beginning the partners strove to produce excellent quality Ports, and their efforts were rewarded early on with prizes at such International Exhibitions as Brussels in 1897 and Antwerp in 1894.

By the middle of the 1920's Thomas Hutcheson had retired and was replaced by Augustus Bouttwood. Upon the death of A D Taylor in 1925, and with no successors, the company was acquired by the Barros family who were already well established in the Port Trade. In 1996 the equally old company of Feuerheerd Bros. (founded in 1815 by Diedrich Feuerheerd) was merged with Hutcheson to become Hutcheson Feuerheerd & Associates. In 2006, Sogevinus Group took control of the vineyards and production.

Hutcheson continue today in the same old 'English Port House' style as they were founded over 100 years ago.

RUBY
  • The youngest of the 'wood ports' - those that have been kept only in cask rather than aged in bottle. Ruby is bottled after only 1-2 years.
  • Bright brick-red colour, lively straightforward fruit and sweet finish.
TAWNY
  • A blend of Ruby and White port - not to be confused with proper aged Tawnies.
  • Somewhat lighter and a touch less sweet than the Ruby
WHITE
  • Available dry or medium sweet.
  • Refreshing apritif or summer drink, served chilled or with ice.
LATE BOTTLED VINTAGE 2001
  • Aged in wood for 4-6 years with the ability to age further in bottle.
  • Good depth of flavour and nice spirtiy finish.
10 YEAR OLD TAWNY
  • Kept in wood for 10 years which takes colour our of the port leaving it a tawny brown colour.
  • Stylistically different - lighted with nice fig and nutty flavours.
COLHEITA 1999
  • Single vintage but aged, usually 7-8 years, in cask not bottle which speeds up the maturation process.
  • Can be produced when Vintages are not declared - fine wines, good complexity and great value. Needs decanting.
