Matilda Nieves Mencia

A wood fairy on her swing, surrounded by the idyllic forests of the D.O. Ribeira Sacra, leaving behind a tail of flavours evoking the unmistakable nuances of the Mencía grape. For a time it was thought to be a variety of Cabernet Franc, but is now regarded as a varietal originating in Spain.

Produced at their Bodegas Rectoral de Amandi winery, this wine continues the Gallegas family commitment to top quality winemaking – introducing a modern and contemporary offering named after one of the founder’s granddaughters.

Matilda Nieves Mencía 2020 gained a Platinum Medal – 97 points – in the 2021 Decanter World Wine Awards. It was one of only 9 Spanish wines and 50 worldwide to have obtained the distinction “Best in Show”.

About the Producer

Bodegas Gallegas

Bodegas Gallegas is a group of five wineries located in: Rectoral de Umia (Rías Baixas), Rectoral de Amandi (Ribeira Sacra), Alanís (Ribeiro), Milenium and Arnoya.

Their origins date back more than 50 years when Manuel Vázquez carried out his wine-selling business from a small cellar. As is so often the case with major business projects, Bodegas Gallegas began with humble origins and boundless enthusiasm; theyhave grown but have never forgotten the essence that is enriched by tradition and the family nature of the business

Bodegas Gallegas are now the largest wine seller in Galicia and one of the most important in Spain. Priding themselves in selecting only the best grapes to cultivate on their land, varieties such as Albariño, Mencía, Godello and Treixadura are harvested with loving care and constant dedication on the more than 300 hectares of vineyard that they own.
