The oldest brewery in Mannheim was founded in 1679 when Jean du Chène, from Wallonia, established a brewery and tavern which he named Eichbaum - the German translation of his surname (which is oak tree in English).
In the brewery they use malted barley mainly from the local region of Electoral Palatinate (around the Rhine). The majority of their hops are from the Hallertau growing region situated almost in the middle of Bavaria. Water is drawn from Eichbaum’s own three wells, sunk at a depth of more than 100m.
Baden-Württemberg and Palatine lager styles are traditionally less strongly hopped and taste a little sweeter than those from other regions.
