CERVEZAS MORITZ – “The First Beer of Barcelona since 1856”

For 170 years Moritz has built its brewing expertise in Barcelona, combining it’s heritage and brewing tradition with a continuous commitment to innovation.

Moritz can proudly be considered the beer of Barcelona - founded in 1856, it was the first beer brewed in the city. Louis Moritz, a young brewer originally from Alsace, arrived in Barcelona and began producing his own beer in 1856 thus laying the foundations for what would become one of the city’s most iconic beer brands.

In 1864 his new Moritz brewery opened on Ronda Sant Antoni, establishing a site that remains at the heart of the brand to this day. The historic brewery was extensively renovated in 2011 under the direction of renowned French architect and designer Jean Nouvel, transforming it into the Fàbrica Moritz Barcelona which is now a space combining brewing, gastronomy, culture and entertainment.

Following Louis’s death in 1920, Moritz continued its development and reputation as one of Barcelona’s leading breweries until encountering the global economic difficulties of 1978 when the company was dissolved. But the Moritz family recovered the use of the trademarks and subsequently restarted brewing in 2004, thus marking the beginning of a new chapter for the brand. Since then the company has combined its historic brewing heritage with a strong focus on innovation and new consumer experiences. In 2016 the Moritz Beer Lab was created as the company’s R&D and brewing experimentation centre.

Today, Moritz remains deeply rooted in Barcelona while continuing to expand beyond the city, offering a diverse portfolio of beers and bringing the spirit of Barcelona to consumers in markets around the world.
