Ch. Sabran Corbieres | Languedoc, France

£13.40

A classic, bold, southern French and Rhone-style red blend of 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 20% Mourvèdre from old vines.

Ch. Sabran is a label of Château de Mattes-Sabran, a highly regarded historic estate of 222 acres. The vineyards are located up in the hills near the village of Portel des Corbières and can be divided into two parts: the first, smaller portion, is located on the plains near the Berre River, on alluvial soils. The larger portion, higher up in the hills, includes both gravel-rich terraces with large quartz stones (seen most often in Châteauneuf-du-Pape) and plots rich in limestone.

The estate dates back to 1733 and has been owned by the Sabran family since the French revolution. Le Château de Portel was built by the Visigoths; being situated at the confluence of the Berre and the Rec du Berra rivers, it’s position on a rocky promontory made it easy to defend. In 1930, owing to its dilapidated condition, the château was partially demolished by the municipality, but the entrance gate is a surviving remnant of the building.

Corbieres, in the west of Languedoc, comprises various soils amongst its landscape of scrubland, schist peaks, clay-limestone plateaus and limestone plains. This landscape of incomparable beauty gives a completely unique identity to its wines.
