Wine Mazer Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Italy

Mazer Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Italy

£13.50

Mazer is a local dialect word meaning ‘distinguished’ – an apt description of this wine’s character.

This 100% Nebbiolo (the varietal used for the famous Barolo) is sourced from various zones of the Valtellina valley to obtain a great balance.

The vineyards, all within the Valtellina Superiore DOCG zone in Lombardy, are of shallow sandy loam soils of low fertility. The dry stone wall terraces have a variety of aspects – south, south east, south west – and are between 300-500m above sea level.

After hand harvesting a small proportion of grapes are dried for a few days to enhance concentration and then added to the must – lending dark fruit notes to the aromas and further enriching the taste with soft tannins.

Other grapes undergo either a short vinification and extremely slow fermentation at low temperatures, or a longer (sometimes more than a month) maceration after a short fermentation. The wine is aged for two years, of which more than one is in medium and large vats of French and Slavonic oak.
