Somewhere Else Malbec | Valle de Tulum, Argentina
Do the shepherds of the Andes loose their sheep somewhere else – or are they abducted by aliens?
Does great wine come from somewhere else other than Mendoza in Argentina – such as the Tulum Valley?
This wine will answer the second question – and the aroma and taste will take you somewhere else.
Made from selected and hand-picked Malbec grapes grown in their own vineyards located at an altitude of 650-670 meters above sea level and also purchased from farms from the Pedernal Valley, which ensures the richness and versatility of the future wine. The grapes harvested at the moment of optimum maturity are subjected to ridge separation and soft crushing. This is followed by fermentation in steel vats at a controlled temperature of 25°C and prolonged maceration. In general, this process takes up to 25 days. At the end of the malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged on the lees in French and American oak barrels for 8 months. Cold stabilisation and light filtration are carried out before bottling
San Juan is the second largest grape and wine producing region in Argentina, with over 47000ha planted. Tulum Valley, is the most important of the five valleys in the province. They have an annual average temperature of 17°C and precipitation of just 90mm per year.
These climatic conditions have a high impact on the wine’s differentiating quality – fruity wines with unique personality and style. According to winemakers with a vast experience in the region, this characteristic is explained by the warm and very dry – desert – conditions and unique sun exposure of an average of 330 days a year, the very low level of precipitation.
Due to the lack of heavy rainfall in the Tulum Valley, the Quebrada de Ullum Dam on the San Juan River is essential for viticulture, providing vines with clear melt water from the Andes peaks. The fertile alluvial soils of the region are composed of fine-grained clay with small accumulations of lime.
