The company was established in 1970 by Rudi Plath in Bolton, primarily operating as a provider of exclusive German wine ‘Ahrkellerei Morgenrot’ and French wine ‘Les Chevaliers du Franc Terrior,’ as Morgenrot Chevaliers.
The business expands its portfolio of wines to meet the growing demands of its customer base. During this period it becomes the UK importer of Krombacher German Pils. Turnover is in excess of £1 million p.a.
Acknowledging the development of the business the company changes from ‘Ltd’ to ‘Plc’ status. Agency lines increase with the acquisition of the ‘Rioja Wine Corporation’ thus offering a range of exclusive Spanish wines. This is backed by the addition of Cruzcampo, one of Spain’s leading beer brands, to the portfolio. Turnover increases to above £2 million p.a.
The founder of Morgenrot Rudi Plath becomes Chairman with Ray Flynn appointed as Managing Director. Morgenrot acquires the business of two of its Midlands trading partners – Pierre Henck Wines in 2003, Peter Kunert Wines in 2007 – thus consolidating an interest and customer base in the region. The expanding company relocates to a new 20,000ft facility in Swinton, Manchester which operates as head office and main warehouse. New agency products in the portfolio include wines from Argentina, Australia, Chile and South Africa.
The company changes its name from Morgenrot Chevaliers Plc to Morgenrot Group Plc and turnover exceeds £4 million pa.
